To provide a happy and purposeful environment for pre-school children, enabling them to adjust to the changed environment away from home and parents for a short period each day, to learn social skills with their own peer groups and encourage imagination, creativity, practical ability and self confidence.
Location and Background
NODDY was established some 40 years ago by the current owner in response to an evident need for such provision in the city of Bangkok. Initially the focus was on the expatriate community but this subsequently expanded to provision for Thai nationals as well.
Being situated in a cul-de-sac in a prime residential area of Bangkok with close proximity to various embassies, and large business headquarters and offices, NODDY provides a high visibility option for an expanding group of families. With the advent of the AEC (Asian Economic Community) International education for Thai children has become very popular and the Centre has become well-known because the way they operate meets the objectives of these children to be well-prepared for entry to the prime international schools. We operate under license from The Department of Child Welfare of Thailand.
At present there are approximately 160 children with ages ranging from 18 months to 6 years. NODDY admits both boys and girls, of all nationalities and religions. Most of the children go on to International schools such as Shrewsbury International School-Bangkok, followed by St.Andrews School, Garden International School and Alliance Français.
In the main, the children come from Britain, mainland Europe, Australia, India, Pakistan and some 15 other countries. These expatriates make up around 50% of the pupil population.
Some 70 children are in the under 3yrs old groups, some of whom leave for Early Years 1 classes in Shrewsbury International School, 36 are 3-4- year olds, 29 are 4 -5 years old, and the remaining 15 are 5-6 years old. There are currently waiting lists for the earlier year groups.
NODDY uses the QCA guidelines for their curriculum and scales it down to suit the younger children, always being conscious of the ‘five areas of learning’.
There are 32 full-time staff comprising 13 class teachers, 17 teaching assistants, a swimming teacher, 3 administrative staff and 3 other general staff. In addition there are 3 part-time staff – a music teacher and 2 PE teachers. There is also a part-time transport manager. Many of the staff have been with the Centre for a considerable time, up to 20 years in some cases. All the staff are hired by NODDY’s operating company. Other staff involved with NODDY are those managing Extra Curricular Activities (ECA), where services are provided by professional companies e.g. Football, Kid Sports, Thai language class, Ballet, music, judo, yoga, etc.
The main building is purpose-built as a pre-school centre. The building is constructed of brick and concrete, and consists of 3 stories, with the gymnasium and assembly hall on the third floor. It is a bright and airy building divided into 16 classroom group areas. A new 2 storeys building with 2 classrooms and other facilities is currently under construction and will be completed ready to function in January 2018.
The classrooms are well-appointed, each having a computer installed. There is an interactive whiteboard in the 5-6 year old class. There are educational toys, books and handicraft materials in all classes.
NODDY’s gymnasium is well-appointed. In addition, there are ballet bars in the assembly hall, a kitchen for the children’s use, a rubber surface playground and a separate play area for the nursery children. There is also a small wooden, Thai style building in the main garden, which houses a lending library.
Opposite the site of the main building there is, in a long-term leased property, a swimming pool, a grass playing field with trampoline and shaded area for sand and water play. There is a garden plot for children’s use and a parking area.
The main property has an area of 1,738 square metres and is freehold. The leasehold land opposite measures 700 square metres.
